For our clients wishing to travel abroad with their pets, whether this is to Northern Ireland, Europe or further afield, we can help with or complete the documentation required to allow this.
Northern Ireland:
From 4th June 2025, if you live in Great Britain, the new Northern Ireland pet travel scheme will come into effect. As long as your pet is microchipped, this allows you to travel from Great Britain to Northern Ireland with a simple lifelong pet travel document issued by DEFRA, which lasts for the lifetime of your pet and is free of charge. This can only be used for pets travelling with their owners and when there is no intention of travelling onwards into the Republic of Ireland.
Europe – including the Republic of Ireland:
Unfortunately, we can no longer issue Pet Passports under the EU PET travel scheme, and EU Pet Passports issued in Britain are no longer accepted for entry into the European Union. In their stead, we are able to issue Animal Health Certificates (AHCs), which are valid after the date of issue for:
- 10 days for entry into the EU (or Northern Ireland)
- 4 months for onward travel within the EU after you enter the EU
- 4 months for re-entry to Great Britain
If travelling to the EU, your pet will require vaccination for Rabies at least 21 days before your planned departure, so please plan ahead. All the latest information from DEFRA can be found at: www.gov.uk/taking-your-pet-abroad. If you require further information from us, would like to arrange an AHC with us or enquire about prices, please get in touch.
[The cost of an AHC is £214 for the first pet and £95 for each additional pet. This does not include the cost of the Rabies vaccination or any worming treatment required for travel].
If you have an existing EU Pet Passport, issued by an EU country still in the PET travel scheme, you should still be able to travel with this, providing your pets Rabies vaccinations are up to date. Depending on the country you are visiting, your pet may need a wormer treatment before leaving or returning. Please contact us if you would like to check the specific requirements before travelling.
America, Australia and elsewhere:
If you are planning to travel or emigrate to countries outside of Europe, individual countries will have their own import requirements, so we advise becoming familiar with these well in advance of your planned travel. Preparing a dog for travel to Australia, for example, can take over 6 months. Our export vets are all OV66 registered to complete the ID checks required for pets travelling to Australia.
